Mr. Oni Head

Here's the oni head t-shirt design version, with mockup. Had to beef up the line work a bit to allow the ink to pass through the screen. The art print version will be digitally painted, but can take a while to complete considering my current workload. Let me know what you guys think!

365 Challenge: Day 36

I apologize for the large gap of days where the illustration entries were supposed to go. I've loaned my laptop to a friend of mine while he's getting his fixed. I've been keeping up plenty with the challenge well enough, but I do have a bunch of drawings that will need to be scanned.

In the mean time, I've been creating a few traditional Japanese patterns that will soon be available to purchase in fabric/wrapping paper/wallpaper form on Spoonflower. Already ordered test swatches and keeping my fingers crossed that they'll turn out lovely.

Here's one today, the other finished one will be posted tomorrow:

Oni Head Work-in-Progress Update

After not touching this drawing over the past few months, I've decided to pick it back up and resume work. I've added detail work primarily in the hair with pencil, though it's kinda hard to see the individual strands of hair from my cell phone's shoddy camera. Also added shading in the face and horns.

My original intention was for this oni head piece to be silkscreened onto clothing, but I'm concerned that the fine lines won't transfer during the exposure part, even with a higher mesh. I'll try to find a way around this issue, probably by thickening the line work a bit more. Even then, should this particular design actually does go to screen printing, it will probably only be offered in dark inks on lighter garments. For now, Oni-san will be released in giclee print and greeting card format.

365 Challenge: Day 6

"Nice hat, outlander" (Pencil, bit of Photoshop for cleanup and color overlay).
The idea of a Dunmer gondolier and a ronin meeting one another struck me earlier this evening, because, well...you obviously know from the picture. For a relatively quick sketch, I'm quite satisfied with how this turned out.

Speaking of gondoliers, I recall a bit from an episode of the ninth season of the Drew Carey Show where bitter power player, Traylor laments over the breakup with her boyfriend/co-worker, Scott. Her solution to overcome her loss was to travel to Italy where she intends to partake in
"shopping...drink some wine...ride a gondolier." Kelly responds with, "Um, don't you mean gondola-" "I know what I've said!"

Progress work

...of the oni head/mask/thing. I still have detail work and shading to add in but at least I've worked up the gumption to resume illustrating this piece after letting it sit for weeks on end. Hopefully I'll maintain enough motivation to get this one ready for screen printing soon.

There are numerous factors that have been contributing to my overall desire to draw anything new for the shop these past several months, but I prefer not to divulge any specific details right now.

Work-in-progress

...of an oni mask for my newest t-shirt design. I may also make an art print version depending on the results.

I do sincerely apologize for the lack of new illustrations/designs this year. I've been experiencing periods of "burnout" where I'd either start a bunch of projects but then lose the motivation to finish them or simply not touch my list of concepts at all. And whenever I get the gumption to pick up on my new designs, other non-related business and general life issues get tossed in my way. But come this year's holiday season, I'll try my best to put out at least a couple of new designs, dammit!

I've been featured!

Just got a lovely convo today from Katrina and Inguna of Moods & Appetites, notifying that they featured my black Japanese pine t-shirt in their latest blog entry, along with a collection of gorgeous Asian-themed artwork (left side, near the bottom of the image).  Thanks, guys! ^_____^

Kimono Photo Shoot!

Recently, I got my coveted shishi nagoya obi in the mail:

Awww yeeeah!

...and I took some time off to get dolled up in kimono and do a little photo shoot. I wore my red/cream yabane komon with my new obi, accessorized 'em with a navy/white han eri, pale green shibori obiage and dusty red/green obijime. I also wore my white zori with mustard yellow floral print hanao (thong straps of the zori sandals), but those aren't pictured due to the room wasn't big enough to get all of me in frame.

Also, I really need to buy more obi accessories and zori, because I'm severely lacking in those departments.

EDIT: It's been so long since I wore kimono that I forgot to keep the sleeve openings at the back, not leave them at the front. *headdesk* My bad. Will definitely keep that in mind next time.
